I’m sure that my site isn’t the first one you’ve visited on your search for the best budget beginner 3D printer. When deciding on a 3D printer for myself, I read as many comparisons, reviews and buying guides as I could and they all suggested wildly different 3D printers. This lack of consensus on what the best 3d printer was left me even more confused. It wasn’t until I finally made a decision, bought one and started using it that I understood why different resources recommend entirely different 3D printers.
Before we get into all the 3D printing goodness, I’m going to tell you something that no other 3D printer review site will. And it’s that generally speaking, the more budget-friendly a 3D printer is, the less beginner-friendly it tends to be.
Let me explain…
When I first heard about 3D printing I imagined it to be a lot like the food replicators from Star Trek. Just select the object you want to create, press a button …and voila, a prime rib dinner appears!

It turns out that 3D printing is a bit more involved than that. Like any new technology, 3D printing has made many advances in a relatively short period of time – coming down in price, growing easier to setup and operate and definitely more reliable than just a few years ago. But I wouldn’t call it a beginner-friendly tool just yet.
Many of you will get a perfect 3D print on your first try, and for others of us, it will take some hands-on tinkering and adjustments before we get to that point. The biggest reason for this is that in general, budget-level 3D printers tend to have less quality control. Most of us will get a 3D printer that works pretty well out of the box, and then a few purchasing the same 3D printer will get a potato where many parts need to be adjusted and calibrated. The expensive 3D printers are more consistent from machine to machine and arrive ready for you to hit the print button and watch your ideas come to life.
Customer service with budget 3D printers will also tend to be spotty. Don’t get me wrong, the user manuals do a great job in helping you get the 3D printer assembled and even walk you through the print bed-leveling process. But there’s other tweaks and adjustments you can make yourself from the start, even as a beginner, to increase your chances of a successful first 3D print.
Luckily, there are large online communities of 3D printing enthusiasts to support you throughout your 3D printing journey with a wealth of troubleshooting tips, 3D printing advice and even user-submitted upgrades to enhance your 3D printer’s capabilities. Being hands on with maintenance and troubleshooting will make you more knowledgeable about the mechanics of 3D printing and therefore, better at getting the best 3D prints out of any machine in the future.

Extruder Types
Your printer’s filament control will come in one of two main types – Bowden Drive and Direct Drive.

Best Budget 3D Printers for Beginners
There are two main kinds of 3D printers: FDM (fused deposition modeling) and resin printers. When it comes to the best budget 3D printers that are also beginner-friendly, we’ll be talking about FDM. This is the go-to choice for many who are just getting started with 3D printing.
FDM 3D printers work by taking a thermoplastic filament and forcing it through a heated nozzle, which melts the filament and deposits it in 2D layers on the build platform. While still warm, these layers fuse with each other to eventually create a 3D part.
FDM printers are much more convenient, making them a perfect starting point. But it’s always worth remembering that resin printers are an option. They can give you extremely detailed and smooth results (for a price premium, of course), but that’s a topic for a different day.
No budget 3D printer is perfect of course, and sure, you might need to do a bit of tinkering to get the best quality prints. But trust me, it’s all part of the fun.
1. Creality Ender-3 V2 Neo: Best Overall 3D Printer

Creality is known for its large and active community, making it a popular choice for beginners. The Ender-3 V2 Neo offers an affordable price point, ease of use, and the ability to make your own upgrades and modifications in the future.
I figured I’d start by talking about the 3D printer brand I recently purchased after doing tons of research, pouring over hundreds of reviews and spending a great deal of time in 3D printing communities to read about real experiences. What made me decide to go with the Creality brand was the number of features I was getting for the price and the fact that I probably won’t outgrow this 3D printer anytime soon because there’s an enthusiastic community supporting it with user-submitted upgrades you can install yourself.
I ended up buying the Creality Ender-3 Max Neo which is in the same series as the V2 Neo because of its larger build volume. The V2 Neo is perfect for 3D printing all kinds of parts and mechanisms but if you want to print a whole helmet in a single print or larger cosplay pieces, super-sizing to the Max Neo may be worth the extra money. I’ll gladly take it over the previous carborundum glass plate because nothing’s worse than completing a beautiful print and having to fight to get it off the build plate without damaging it. The PC spring steel plate offers excellent adhesion, requires little to no cleaning (even after dozens of prints), and is remarkably user-friendly. Pro level 3D printers like the Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro have perks that you typically won’t find with those in the entry-level tier. And as you probably expect, they also come with pro-level pricing! But there are certain instances when you can snatch one up at an incredible price.
When 3D printer manufacturers release new models, it’s common for the previous model to go on sale. With the release of the Elegoo Neptune 4 series, you can now get the previous 3 series models for a steal! Even though you won’t be purchasing the latest release, you’ll still be getting more features with the Neptune 3 Pro than you typically would with other entry-level budget 3D printers.
The key feature you’ll find useful with the Neptune 3 Pro is the ability to handle a wider variety of filaments, especially flexible ones like TPU. This is because it comes with a direct drive extruder versus a Bowden typically found on budget-friendly 3D printers. You’ll also have a more comprehensive auto-leveling system and dual lead screw drive for the Z-axis which will give your gantry more structural stability for more precise 3D prints.

Having dual part cooling fans offers enhanced cooling efficiency and more uniform airflow around the printed object. The dual fans work in tandem to rapidly cool down the extruded filament from all sides, reducing warping, improving overhang performance, creating good bridges and enhancing print quality.
- Resume Printing Function: The 3D printer will automatically pause when the filament runs out or breaks. It also resumes printing from where it left off in case of a power outage.
- Fast & Easy Assembly: The main components come already 90% pre-assembled along with a tool kit and instructions for putting it together. Most people complete it in less than 25 minutes.
- Built-in Belt Tensioners: Pre-installed knobs make adjusting the tension on the 3D printer’s various belts much easier than having to use extra tools like Allen wrenches.
3. Anycubic Kobra 2: Best Fast 3D Printer

The Anycubic Kobra 2 brings high-speed 3D printing to the masses at an affordable price. Print out 3D models, mechanisms and prop parts six times faster than other entry-level printers. It will easily produce prints at a whopping 300 millimeters per second, though the best quality seems to hover around 150 – 200 mm/s. Thanks to a few upgrades over its predecessor like more metal parts for durability, enhanced cooling to support high speeds without warping and a direct drive extruder to accommodate a wider variety of filaments, you get a speedy 3D printer that can reliably churn out good quality prints.
But speed isn’t the only thing you get with this 3D printer. Anycubic’s completely automated print bed leveling system essentially removes manual bed leveling altogether. This eliminates one of the first big hurdles beginners face when getting into 3D printing. If you’re hunting for a balance between performance and affordability, the Kobra 2 might be your buddy with beginner-friendly features and speed that are worth a bit more than the previous two 3D printers but still under $300.

What I like most about the Anycubic Kobra 2 3D Printer:
- Print Speed: Pump out 3D prints at a fraction of the time it takes other budget printers! Even at the recommended 200 mm/s, you’ll be able to go through prototyping stages much faster and cut production time for your animatronics projects. Printing at the fastest speeds typically causes you to lose some of the details but this won’t matter for most mechanisms, support frames or exoskeleton panels that will get covered in fur, foam, latex or silicone anyways. For 3D printed parts that need more details or are a key visual element of your prop, try slowing down the print speed and playing around with layer height to get the detail level closer to what the other beginner-friendly 3D printers deliver.
- LeviQ 2.0 Automatic Leveling + Smart Z-Offset: The print bed leveling process is completely hands-free because they’ve removed the adjustment knobs normally found under the print bed that are used for manual bed leveling. Instead, an inductive probe tests 25 points across the print bed surface and makes the necessary z-axis offset adjustments if it detects any irregularities. I’ve always used a 3D printer’s auto-leveling feature as a way to fine-tune my manual adjustments but with this printer, everything is automatic. Just turn on the 3D printer, calibrate it and you’re ready to print.
- Dual Gear Direct Drive Extruder: On most budget and beginner-friendly printers, you’d expect to find a Bowden extruder, but more and more entry-level printers are offering direct drive extruders. The defining feature of the Anycubic Kobra 2 is how fast its extruder melts and deposits filament. The two gears inside not only help it grip and move the filament more reliably, they also allow you to work with a wider variety of filaments, including flexible types like TPU. The hot end is also all-metal for better performance and durability.
- Upgraded Cooling Fan System: Right on the print head is a high-speed fan cooling newly deposited layers at 7,000 rpm. This allows the next layer to be printed quickly and reduces the chance of warping in your completed 3D print. As you can expect, this fan will run noisier than the ones cooling other parts of the 3D printer. This may or may not be an issue for you depending on your work environment.
- Double Z-axis Threaded Rods: Faster 3D printing needs greater stability to get good results so you’ll find two z-axis threaded rods to lessen the lifting resistance and give you more consistent prints with less wear on the 3D printer.

The textured PEI surface is great for adhesion so you don’t need any additional adhesives like a glue stick. Then to remove your completed 3D print, just bend the build plate slightly and it should detach.

The smart sensor can detect when you run out of filament or if the power goes out and will pause the 3D printing process. Once either of these issues have been resolved, it picks back up from where it stopped.

- Minimalist LCD Touchscreen: Control panels often provide an overwhelming amount of settings to navigate through which give you more precise control over your 3D printer. This makes it easy to get to the settings you need and gives you enough control for everyday use but more advanced users may miss the added control with more robust control panels.

4. Artillery Sidewinder SW-X2: Largest Build Volume 3D Printer

A 3D printer’s build volume and the range of filaments it can handle are two factors that most dramatically boosts its price. With the Artillery Sidewinder X2, you get both for around $300 and I often see this 3D printer for less than that during sales events. Although the Sidewinder X2 has some great improvements over its predecessor, the X1, there are still some trade-offs in other areas in order to give you both a larger 3D print area and the ability to work with a wider variety of filaments. Fortunately, you can squeeze even better quality prints with some inexpensive upgrades that you can install yourself, even if you’re a complete beginner. Best of all, Sidewinder X2 enthusiasts have even designed many of these mods and upgrades for you to 3D print yourself!
Even though I was wary at first of the price being so low for the build volume you get, I decided to include a large format 3D printer on this best budget 3D printers list because I know many of you need to print bigger items for motorized props, mechanisms, and robots right from the start. Large build volume 3D printers are also useful for printing helmets, armor and other cosplay items in one session that would otherwise need to be printed in separate pieces and then glued together. The Sidewinder X2, is a great value for all the features you get out of the box and any shortcomings like z-wobble or parts cooling can be remedied with a few easy upgrades which I describe in more detail below.

What I like most about the Artillery Sidewinder SW-X2 3D Printer:
- Large Build Volume: Once you cross into the 300 mm build volume realm, the price usually jumps up noticeably. Not so with the Artillery Sidewinder X2! A large print bed isn’t just useful for 3D printing bigger parts, you can also produce copies of smaller mechs, models and panels in one 3D print session, boosting your productivity.
- Auto Bed Leveling: One of the main upgrades for the Sidewinder X2 over its X1 predecessor is the addition of an auto bed leveling sensor, a feature that’s becoming more and more standard in budget 3D printers nowadays. This sensor works similar to the BLTouch or CRTouch found on other 3D printers and probes 20 points along the print bed’s surface to create a mesh and adjust for any small leveling inconsistencies. Don’t forget to perform a manual adjustment first to get the print bed level as close to straight as possible before fine-tuning it with the auto level feature.
- AC-Powered Print Bed: Unlike the typical DC-powered beds, an AC-powered bed heats up significantly faster. In about two minutes or so you’re ready to start 3D printing. Since the heating element is an integral part of the glass bed, be careful when removing your 3D prints. If the surface gets excessively scratched or damaged, you’ll have to replace the entire print bed along with the heater. But with proper care, you can expect the surface to last a long time. If you prefer a removable build plate, you can always add a PEI spring steel sheet and magnetic sticker over the glass bed. Having the heater and glass as one unit minimizes the weight of the build platform, which contributes to better print quality since the machine doesn’t have to fight as much inertia. Another advantage to glass beds is that the surface is absolutely flat. It’s not uncommon for print beds made of other materials on budget 3D printers to be warped so even if the bed is perfectly level at the corners, the middle is inconsistent.
- Titan-style Direct Drive Extruder: The real-deal E3D Titan extruder is a lightweight, high-performance extruder with a 3:1 gear ratio allowing it to push through a lot of filament with precision making it a popular choice as an upgrade to the extruders normally found on budget 3D printers. The Titan clone used on the Sidewinder X2 incorporates these performance improvements but I hoped they would use metal gears rather than plastic ones which don’t last as long. Eventually you’ll have to replace them as part of your regular 3D printer maintenance.
- Volcano-style Hotend: The PTFE-lined Volcano-clone hotend makes printing large parts more efficient by allowing higher flow rates than the regular V6 hotends. This allows you to work with most filaments like PLA, PETG, TPU and low-temperature ABS as long as you don’t exceed 240℃. There’s nothing wrong with a PTFE heat break but it’s another item that will have to be replaced eventually. But don’t worry, the hotend is designed for quick swaps, even for a beginner. For less maintenance you can upgrade to a bi-metal or titanium heat break.
Being able to push out a lot of filament means that the 3D printer has to be able to cool it fast enough before the next layer. This is where most Sidewinder X2 owners like to upgrade the existing cooling duct for one that sits closer to the nozzle. You can 3D print this mod yourself and pair it with a better quality cooling fan than the 4020 radial fan that comes with the printer.
- Dual-driven Z-Axis Lead Screws: For large volume 3D printers, a dual axis Z-motor and lead screw setup is a necessity. It minimizes issues with stability and z-wobble that are present on all large Cartesian-style 3D printers with direct drive extruders (as opposed to lighter Bowden extruders). Despite the improvement with z-banding on taller prints, it is still present with the Sidewinder X2 and you can get even better print quality by adding aftermarket braces and rod stabilizers. You can even 3D print these yourself from sites like Thingiverse!
Additional Features of the Artillery Sidewinder SW-X2:
- Resume Printing Function: Like the other 3D printers on our list, the Sidewinder X2 will pause the printing process if you experience a power outage or it runs out of filament. Once the lights are back on or you’ve added a new spool of filament, it then resumes from the same place.

5. Sovol SV06: Best Workhorse

The Sovol SV06 is another workhorse favorite among beginners looking for an inexpensive way to get started with 3D printing. It shares many features with the open source Prusa MK3S+ which goes for about $900, but for a fraction of the price. Although Sovol has been moving from borrowing Creality design elements to implementing Prusa-inspired ones, you’ll still recognize some Creality tech in the SV06. For less than $300, the Sovol SV06 also has the same upgrade potential as the Prusa MK3S+ but for far less of an investment.
While it’s not the fastest 3D printer on this list, it’s a solid machine that includes key beginner-friendly features to produce some quality results.

What I like most about the Sovol SV06 3D Printer:
- Planetary Direct Drive Extruder: I always like seeing a direct drive extruder on budget 3D printers but the Sovol SV06 takes it up a notch by using a planetary-geared direct drive. Planetary gears can produce more torque with a relatively small motor and better precision which improves the quality of your 3d prints. Whereas the gears on Titan-style extruders are accessible from the outside to help load filament, the planetary-geared design places them internally for a more compact print head. But Sovol included a large wheel on the front of the print head for accessible filament loading.
The only disadvantage with a planetary gear setup is that flexible filaments like TPU are trickier to load. The path towards the filament drive gear isn’t as defined to navigate so it’s easy for flexible filaments to take a different path and get stuck. But with some patience, you can guide it through the correct path.
- All-Metal Hot End: Many budget 3D printers come with a PTFE-lined hot end, but the one on the Sovol SV06 is all metal so it can reach a temperature of 300℃. This means you can work with more filaments like ABS and nylon that require these higher temperatures. PTFE starts to degrade once you exceed around 240℃ so it has to be replaced at regular intervals if you 3D print with these high-temp filaments.
One item I’d consider upgrading is the parts cooling fan on the print head. It faces downwards and sucks in warm air from the print bed. Other budget 3D printers also have this design so it isn’t necessarily a bad thing but the Sovol SV06 also uses a single small blower fan. Out of the box, one thing you can do is increase the print time per layer to ensure that the previous layer has sufficiently cooled down before the next one is printed. This will greatly improve parts cooling and increase the quality of your 3D prints.
- Auto Bed Leveling: The Sovol SV06 uses an inductive bed leveling sensor to measure 25 points across the print bed surface. By analyzing the distances from the probe to the bed, the firmware automatically adjusts the Z height of the extruder to account for any inconsistencies, giving you the best first layer possible.
- Dual Z-Axis Lead Screws: One of the most popular upgrades for budget 3D printers is adding dual Z-axis lead screws because it provides greater stability and removes some of the sag you get with a single Z-axis design. Like some of the other budget 3D printer picks on this list, the Sovol SV06 already comes with this upgrade.
- PEI Flexible Magnetic Build Plate: Flexible PEI-coated print surfaces have quickly become a popular choice among 3D printer manufacturers. It’s great for adhesion during the 3D printing process but because the build plate is also flexible, you can easily to remove your completed 3D prints with a gentle bend.
Additional Features of the Sovol SV06:
- Quiet Stepper Drivers: The SV06 uses Trinamic TMC2209 drivers for the stepper motors so they’re going to be pretty quiet. This is an important feature for those that work in a shared home or office environment. The most noise you’ll hear is the machine calibrating its software-based endstops but this is something you only have to do once in a while.
- Partially Assembled: The SV06 comes partially pre-assembled but there are more pieces you have to put together than with other budget 3D printers on the market. But even first timers will find the instructions very straightforward and you should be able to complete the assembly in less than an hour.
- Built-in Belt Tensioners: Large knobs make it easy to adjust the tension of the different belts that control the print head’s movement for more precise 3D prints and keep your 3D printer in peak performance for the long-haul.
- Power Outage Protection: If you’re in the middle of a 3D print job and there’s a power outage, the Sovol SV06 will resume from where it left off once power is restored. It does not, however, have a filament run-out sensor so be sure to check your spool before starting larger 3D prints.
