Commercial versions may be more sophisticated, using materials like rubber, metal, and specialized sensors to handle different levels of pressure, weight, or even to provide haptic (touch) feedback.

Top and Bottom Plates

  • Cardboard: Cheap and easy to work with, cardboard is a great option for some short-term fun, like activating props and other effects for Halloween night. But I wouldn’t recommend it for repeated use that needs to last reliably through your attraction’s event dates. The top plate eventually begins to sag in the middle, allowing the conductive surfaces to touch even though no one is stepping on the switch. This will cause your prop or effect to turn on unexpectedly. Cardboard pressure switches are best for low-voltage applications involving no more than a few volts, as it’s not a reliable insulator. If you need to make a few pressure switches, save time with pre-cut flat cardboard sheets.
  • Wood or MDF: Arguably the best material for your pressure plates is plywood or even MDF. Your switch will be more durable yet still easy to cut and work with. It’s also a better insulator than cardboard. A piece of 1/4″ plywood for example, is flexible enough to deflect down when stepped on to make contact with the bottom plate, yet rigid enough to withstand long-term use. I’ve made many pressure plate floor switches out of 1/4″ plywood and have gotten great use out of them, season after season. The most economical option when making multiple pressure plate switches from wood is to buy large 4′ x 8′ boards and cut them to size. If you’re only making a handful of pressure switches, then pre-cut plywood project boards are fast and easy.
  • Metal Sheets: For the most durable and robust designs, you might opt for metal sheets like aluminum or steel, although these would require metalworking tools for cutting and shaping. Metal sheets are excellent conductors, which means they will readily carry electric current. This can be both an advantage (good for switch functionality) and a disadvantage (potential for accidental short circuits or shocks). If you decide to use metal, it’s important to insulate any metal exposed on the outside of the pressure switch with non-conductive material like rubber, foam or an insulated enclosure. You may also want to consider grounding your system to avoid any electrical shocks.

Contact Material

  • Aluminum Foil: Cheap and readily available, aluminum foil can act as the conductive material that makes the electrical connection when the top plate comes into contact with the bottom plate. It’s best for low-voltage applications (up to 12-24 volts) and low current (a few hundred milliamperes) so if you need to switch on a more power-hungry device like a motor, it’s best to include a relay in your circuit.
  • Copper Tape: Copper provides a better conductive surface and copper tape is adhesive-backed for easy application, but it’s more expensive than aluminum foil. It can handle higher current compared to aluminum foil but is still best used in low-voltage applications.

Plate Cushion or Spacers

  • Cardboard or Thin Plywood: A frame or strips of plywood or cardboard along the outer edges allows the center of the pressure plate floor switch to come into contact with one another when stepped on. A cardboard border is much less durable than plywood but works well enough for short-term use.
  • Foam or Rubber Padding: Strips and pieces of foam or rubber can be placed between the base and the top plate. This material acts as a squishy spring, separating the conductive surface on the two plates when no pressure is applied. When someone steps on the plate, the foam or rubber compresses, allowing the conductive surfaces to make contact.
  • Compression Springs: For a more mechanical approach, small compression springs could be used at the corners or at intervals along the edges between the plates. These springs would keep the plates separated but would compress when pressure is applied, allowing the plates to make contact. Springs tend to be metal so be sure to remove the aluminum foil in spots where you place springs. Otherwise both plates will always be electrically connected through the springs.

Wiring and Connectors

  • Electrical Wire: You’ll need enough wire to connect your pressure plate foot switch to the prop or effect you’d like to control, one wire for each plate. Anything between 18-gauge to 22-gauge will do.
  • Inline Wire Connectors: Connect wires together easily with inline wire connectors that allow you to make temporary, yet secure connections without soldering. This makes it easy to break down your prop for storage or repurpose the pressure switch for another feature.
  • Electrical Tape or Heat-Shrink Tubing: For insulating any exposed electrical connections, electrical tape or heat-shrink tubing will protect against shorts or damage.
  • Soldering Iron (optional): An inexpensive soldering iron will allow you to make permanent connections for long-lasting reliability.

Controllers and Relays

  • Microcontrollers (optional): Programmable devices like an Arduino can give you more control over the timing and sequence of animations that happen when the pressure plate switch is activated. It can also activate multiple props in a specific sequence to help with storytelling.
  • Relay Switch or Module (optional): For a less complex setup that doesn’t require any programming, a relay module can activate multiple devices like lights or motors as well as entire props.

How to Make a Pressure Plate Floor Switch

Now that you know how a pressure foot switch works and what materials you plan to use, let’s build one together, step-by-step making sure you have all the knowledge and techniques at your fingertips to bring your haunted visions to life.

1. Design and Cut the Pressure Plates

Designing the pressure plate is a crucial first step in creating a floor switch for a haunted house, motorized prop or animatronic as it sets the foundation for the entire mechanism. Start by determining the size and location of your pressure plate based on the specific needs of your haunted house, attraction or feature setup – consider factors like foot traffic paths, size of visitor groups and the space available.

Most DIY pressure switches are square or rectangular but you can custom-shape them to fit nooks and intricate areas of your attraction space. You can even create a grid of different pressure plate floor switches that activate a variety of effects in the space as people walk around.

Once you’ve determined the size and shape of your pressure plate, cut two pieces of cardboard, plywood or other material of your choice to match these dimensions. One will act as the bottom plate, and the other will be the top plate.

In my case, I made my bottom and top plates out of 1/4″ plywood I had left over from another project and cut them to 12″ x 12″ squares.

2. Foil the Bottom and Top Plates

Cut a piece of aluminum foil large enough to cover the entire surface of one side of each plate. Try to lay the foil as flat and taut as possible. I find it best to use some spray adhesive to keep the foil in place so it doesn’t get loose, sag and touch the foil of the other plate. This would cause your haunt to trigger inadvertently on its own. Cut off any excess foil along the edges or simply fold them over the edge and secure it with tape.

When these 2 plates come in contact, electricity will flow and whatever you decide to hook your pressure plate switch up to will get power for as long as these 2 plates are touching.

3. Add a Middle Spacer

We need a way to keep the top and bottom plates from touching unless pressure is applied. Otherwise, your prop, lighting or special haunt feature will turn on by itself as if possessed! There are a few different ways to create space between the two plates so they only come into contact with one another if someone steps on the switch.

For small to medium pressure switches, I usually cut a 1/4″ plywood frame that’s the same dimensions as the top and bottom plates and cut the middle out, leaving a 3/4″ to 1″ wide border along the outer edge. Sandwiching this hollow frame between the top and bottom plates keeps them separate from each other. But the hole in the middle allows the aluminum foil sheets on each plate to contact each other and complete the electrical circuit when stepped on.

4. Wire the Top and Bottom Plates

Strip about an inch of insulation off a piece of wire and attach it to the foil side of each of your plates using masking tape. Cover all the bare wire with tape so it doesn’t accidentally touch the other plate. This isn’t the most secure way of attaching the wires but it should hold together for Halloween or a seasonal attraction.

If you decided to use copper tape instead of aluminum foil, then you can solder the wires on the tape for a more permanent solution. Be sure to insulate any bare wire with heat shrink tubing.

Repeat this process with your other plate.

5. Assemble and Test

Place one plate foil side up and place the spacer frame over it. Then top it with the other plate foil side down.

The easiest way to test if it works is using the continuity feature of your multimeter. Simply touch each probe to a different wire and it should be silent. When you press down on the top plate, you should hear a tone from your meter. This means that the pressure switch works properly and is ready get wired up to trigger a haunt attraction feature!

If the multimeter immediately starts sounding off without you pressing down on the top plate, then the foil surfaces are touching somewhere. Try wrapping the foil tighter and double check that there’s no excess foil along the edges that’s causing a connection between the top and bottom plates.

If you don’t have a multimeter, you can test your pressure plate switch with an LED and coin battery. Connect the wire from one plate to the cathode (short leg of LED) and the anode (long leg) to the positive side of a coin battery. Then hold the remaining wire to the negative side of the battery to complete the connection. The LED should be off and only turn on with the switch is pressed.

You now have a working pressure plate floor switch that you can start using right away. Just tape the plates and spacer frame together so they don’t shift apart.

How to Wire the Pressure Switch to Your Prop

Wiring a pressure plate floor switch to a prop involves creating a circuit that triggers the prop’s movement, lights, or sound effects when the pressure plate is stepped on. The location where you connect the pressure plate floor switch on a prop determines what you want the prop to do when activated. It must be wired in series with either the positive or ground (negative) wire in the circuit you want to control. I usually wire it in series with the positive wire, especially if you’re interested in controlling a specific component within a larger circuit because many components often share a common ground.

Activating Full Props and Lighting

If you are new to wiring, incorporating a pressure plate floor switch into the DC power supply of an existing prop, whether homemade or store-bought, is the easiest scenario. Props and lighting usually plug into the wall via an AC/DC power adapter. All you have to do is splice in the pressure plate floor switch into the positive wire of your power adapter.

Connect one wire from the pressure plate switch to one end of the cut positive wire from the DC adapter. Connect the other wire from the pressure plate switch to the other end of the cut positive wire. You can twist the wires together and then solder them for a more durable connection. Use electrical tape or heat-shrink tubing to insulate the exposed wire.

Activating a Single Component in a Prop

You may only want to activate only a certain component of a prop or animatronic that includes a variety of sub-circuits for features like LED lights, motors, or sounds effects. You’ll have to identify the positive wire connected to that feature’s sub-circuit and splice in your pressure plate floor switch at that location. This way, your switch only activates that one feature rather than the entire prop or animatronic.

Programming Combined Effects with Microcontrollers

For props and animatronics where you want to create a sequence of animations that have a combination of lights, sound, and motion, you’ll need to consider a more complex circuit or even use a microcontroller like an Arduino. The pressure plate can be connected to an input pin on the microcontroller, which then triggers the various features (lights, motors, sounds) based on the animation program you created.

Control Powerful Props with Relays

For high-voltage or high-current props, a relay is often used as an intermediary between the pressure plate and the prop. The pressure plate activates the relay which then activates the prop. This allows the low-current pressure plate circuit to safely control a higher-current circuit, isolating the two and providing an extra layer of safety.

Before your haunted house opens, have a few people walk through the area to make sure your homemade pressure floor switch isn’t easily noticeable. This can give you a good indication of whether your camouflage methods are effective.
